Honda's Brio Amaze Launching in India on April 18th
Honda's Brio-based entry-level subcompact sedan will be making inroads in India on April 18th. Although its launch date has not officially been confirmed by Honda Cars of India, many local car insiders claim to expect a launch around the 18th of April. Thankfully, Honda India is smart enough to know that a diesel engine variant will sell very well and has fitted the Brio Amaze with a 1.5L i-DTEC diesel that was developed alongside the European 1.6L EarthDreams i-DTEC which will make its way underneath the hoods of the Civic Euro Hatchback/Tourer and the CR-V Euro. Maximum torque is pegged at 200Nm and the Brio Amaze tips the scales at 1 050 kg.
The Brio Amaze will also feature a gasoline engine, the same 1.2L i-VTEC engine in the current Jazz with a power output of 90PS and 110Nm of torque.
Both engines will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission at launch with an automatic transmission coming in later months.
Pricing is widely rumored to start at around INR 5.25 lakhs.
Honda Injects $1 Billion into Acura
In an attempt to revive lagging sales and an unclear focus with Acura, Honda has reportedly invested as much as $1 billion to launch the new 2014/2015 MDX, the new 2014 Acura RLX and the 2015 Acura NSX sports car. Honda is also set to return to its efforts on making Acura, a Tier One luxury brand, a plan that was scrapped in light of the 2008 financial crisis. Acura is currently seen as a grade below its German counterparts and brand prestige is very important in the luxury car market. Hopefully Honda recognizes this and will take advantage of it.
Plans for Acura to expand outside of its home market in North America have been scrapped as Honda focuses on moving Acura upmarket at home.
Honda Accord makes the 2013 AJAC Canadian Car of the Year
The Automotive Journalists Association of Canada has named the 2013 Honda Accord, 2013 Car of the Year. The award was announced before the opening of the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto earlier in February. To win the Canadian Car of the Year, a car must first win its category during the Test Fest, which for the Accord was the Best New Family Car under 30K category and then beat all the other category winners.
Honda Canada's VP Sales and Marketing Dave Gardner had this to say about the Accord's win: "You're looking for nice style, safety, reliability, technology - there are lots of cars that excel in one or two of those areas. We think the Accord excels in all of them."
Honda Regains Top Pick spots with Consumer Reports
This time last year, not a single Honda vehicle made it to the Consumer Reports' annual Top Picks list. This year, 3 Honda vehicles, the Accord, CR-V and the Odyssey made it to the list. The 2013 redesign of the Accord helped it score top marks with the magazine while improved reliability gave the Honda Odyssey an opportunity to clinch the Top Pick spot. The super-practical and reliable Honda CR-V floated to the top in the Small SUV category.
"This year's list has received an overhaul led by Honda's return. After several years marked by some so-so product, its comeback is led by the Accord's redesign and the well-rounded performance and reliability of CR-V and Odyssey," said Rik Paul, Consumer Reports' automotive editor.
Consumer Reports' Top Picks are the best all-around models in their categories and they must meet CR's stringent criteria in 3 areas: road test, reliability and safety. They must rank at or near the top of their category on overall road test scores.
Here's what Consumer Reports had to say about the Accord, Odyssey and CR-V:
MIDSIZED SEDAN: Honda Accord ($23,270 to $30,860). Honda nailed it with this redesign – it's roomy, nice to drive, well equipped and very fuel efficient. With its four-cylinder engine, the Accord squeezes out 30 mpg overall and 40 on the highway, which is as good as the tiny Honda Fit. Higher-trim models have advanced safety features seldom found in this category; all models come with a standard back-up camera.
MINIVAN: Honda Odyssey ($36,830). With improved reliability helping it earn the top spot among family haulers, it provides a comfortable ride and a roomy, quiet, and versatile cabin. The V6 engine performs well and delivers a competitive 19 mpg. And a backup camera – a great safety feature – is now standard on all models.
SMALL SUV: Honda CR-V ($26,455). Virtues include a smooth, responsive powertrain, good fuel economy, a compliant ride, excellent braking, a roomy rear seat, very functional interior, standard backup camera, and outstanding reliability. It's also one of the more competitively priced choices in the class.
Indian Honda Sales for February 2013
Honda Cars of India reported a 26.49% decline in its February 2013 sales compared to the same period in February 2012. The company sold 6 510 units compared to 8 856 units in February 2012. 3 271 units of its flagship City sedan were sold along with 2 916 units of the small Brio hatchback. The Jazz premium hatchback went to 185 owners while the Civic managed to move a mere 21 units. On the bright side, 62 units of the new 2013 Accord sedan were sold. 510 Hondas were also exported in February 2013.
Portland Welcomes the ZipCar + Fit EV
Zipcar, the world's leading car sharing network, today announced the introduction of 2013 Honda Fit EV battery electric vehicles (BEV) into the Zipcar Portland fleet, with the first vehicles located at Portland State University (PSU). Charging stations for the EVs are provided by ECOtality, Inc. (Nasdaq: ECTY), a leader in clean electric transportation and storage technologies, which is also providing Zipcar members access to the company's Blink Network of charging stations in Portland during their reservations.
"We are very excited to introduce Honda Fit EVs into the Zipcar fleet here in Portland. The new EVs add to the selection of smart and sustainable vehicle options Zipcar currently offers, and will help our members further reduce their environmental impact by driving on electricity only," said Jeremy Nelson , General Manager, Zipcar Portland.
The new Honda Fit EVs are located on PSU's campus at Parking Structure 1, and are available to all Zipcar members ages 21+ for hourly reservations, starting from $10.25 per hour. Zipcar chose PSU for the location of its first EVs in Portland because of the University's leadership in environmentally conscious innovations, including its Electric Avenue automotive charging stations on campus.
"Having electric vehicles available at PSU through Zipcar fits perfectly with our sustainability mission," said Portland State University President Wim Wiewel . "It's a clean transportation option that I think our students, faculty and staff are really going to appreciate."
Through Zipcar's program with ECOtality, members who reserve Honda Fit EVs in Portland will have full access to ECOtality's Blink Network of charging stations located throughout the Portland area if they are in need of a charge during their reservation. Each Zipcar Fit EV is outfitted with a Blink InCard, which provides complimentary access to Blink Network charging stations to charge up, similar to the way gas cards work in other Zipcar vehicles. To find Blink Network charging stations in the greater Portland area, please visit: http://www.blinknetwork.com/blinkMap.html.
"As EV's enter into mass adoption, innovative companies such as Zipcar allow us to introduce our Blink charging stations to an audience that might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience an EV," stated Greg Fioriti , Chief Revenue Officer of ECOtality, Inc. "We look forward to working with Zipcar and generating increased awareness of EVs throughout the Portland area."
EV Member Education Program
Prior to reserving one of the Zipcar EVs, members will have the opportunity to learn more about driving electric vehicles through Zipcar's member education program. Members can visit www.zipcar.com/portlandev to learn more about the electric vehicles, watch an instructional video, go through a quick orientation process and make a reservation.
Honda's 2013 Fit EV, based on its popular five-passenger Fit, earns a combined adjusted Environmental Protection Agency mile-per-gallon-equivalency rating of 118 MPGe, and an unprecedented low consumption rating of just 29 kilowatt hours per 100 miles. The 100-percent electric Honda Fit EV features a 20-kilowatt-hour Lithium-Ion battery and a compact 92-kilowatt AC synchronous electric motor that generates 189 ft-lb of torque. When connected to a 240-volt circuit, the Honda Fit EV battery can be recharged in less than three hours from a low charge indicator illumination point.
Zipcar is a longstanding pioneer in using advanced vehicle technologies. It was the first car sharing company in the United States to introduce electric vehicles, starting in Boston in 2002, and the first to offer hybrid vehicles through a partnership with Honda in Seattle in 2003. Zipcar member surveys show a strong interest in the use of advanced technology and alternate fuel vehicles in the program.
BREAKING NEWS: 2014 Honda Civic Tourer Pictures Revealed!
Honda UK has released images of the new Honda Civic Tourer, set to rival the likes of the Ford Focus Estate and the Volkswagen Golf Sportswagen. The Civic Tourer will be unveiled physically at the Geneva Motor Show. Honda has bolted a wagon to the back of the Civic Euro hatchback; however, the company did not reveal any specific dimensions for the car but did claim that the new Civic Tourer would have class-leading space.
Honda UK says that the engine choices will be similar to the ones available for the Civic Euro hatchback including a 1.6L diesel.
The Civic Tourer will be available for order by fall 2013 and unfortunately, it looks like it will be sticking to Europe only.

Hondas at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show ...
Not only will the new Civic Wagon Concept be making its launch at the Geneva Motor Show, Honda will also be showing off a couple other new cars.
One of them is the Honda NSX Concept which will feature a look into what the interior may be. Keep in mind, this could simply be the same concept shown at the North American International Auto Show last month but with Honda badges.
But the one Honda model with the most excitement will probably be the CR-V 1.6i-DTEC. Yes, Europeans will finally receive a diesel variation of the new CR-V. While the diesel engine was offered in previous generations, this one is part of Honda's EarthDreams engine technology and will come available with 2WD and a manual transmission. The CR-V 1.6i-DTEC will be available this fall 2013.
Say Hello to the new Civic Wagon Concept at Geneva!
Much to the surprise of many, Honda will be releasing a Civic Wagon concept at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2013. It is widely speculated that this thinly-disguised concept model will retain most of its styling cues for the production version.
I tend to think of this wagon model as a stretched Civic Euro hatchback with a modified upper rear end. If you look closely, the bottom bumper closely retains the clean sweep that the Civic Euro hatchback currently has so there really wasn't too much for Honda to change to extend the rear rump. I thought the rear taillight area of the current Civic Euro would've looked better if put on a wagon-like hatchback model anyways.
Unfortunately, it looks like North Americans will be shortchanged once again as this model looks to be a European-only model. Hey, one can dream can't they?
American Acura/Honda Sales for January 2013
American Honda today reported January 2013 U.S. sales of 93,626 units, an increase of 12.8 percent compared with January 2012. The Honda brand posted January 2013 sales of 84,137 units, an increase of 12.7 percent compared with January 2012. Acura U.S. January sales of 9,489 units increased 13.2 percent compared with January 2012.
Sales of the all-new 2013 Honda Accord were up more than 75 percent from last year - with 10,000 more Accords sold this January than in January 2012. The totally revised Accord has already become one of the most decorated vehicles in Honda history, garnering a host of awards that include being named for a record 27th time to Car and Driver magazine's 10Best Cars list, as well as winning key comparison tests against its mid-size rivals in comparisons from Car and Driver and Cars.com/USA Today/"MotorWeek".
Honda

- Reflecting key changes, the new 2013 Crosstour sees sales jump 38.2 percent from last January
- Pilot sales are up 16.3 percent compared with last January, with sales of 7,405 units
"The all-new Accord has the Honda brand right where we left off in 2012 - powering significant sales gains in the new year," said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of Sales. "With our strongest vehicle lineup ever and continued sales momentum, we're optimistic 2013 will be a great year for the Honda brand."

Canadian Acura/Honda Sales for January 2013
Combined February sales of 7,220 units by the Honda and Acura divisions of Honda Canada Inc. represented 21% down from last year. The Honda Automobile Division reported January sales of 6,211 units, down 27% from last year, led by strong January sales of Honda Accord (up 147%) and Fit (up 68%). The Acura Division reported February sales of 1,009 units, up 41% over last year, led by strong sales of Acura RDX (up 136%).
"January 2012 was an exceptional sales month for us as we caught up to unfulfilled demand for Civic caused by lack of supply in the last three months of 2011," said Jerry Chenkin, Executive Vice President, Honda Canada Inc. "Canadian consumers embraced Honda and Acura core pillar products in 2012 and we look forward to continued success in 2013."

Honda to offer Siri Eyes on select models
Honda America announced earlier today that it will begin integrating support for Siri into the 2013 Honda Accord, Acura RDX and ILX as a dealer-installed option. By the end of 2013, owners with a compatible iPhone on iOS 6 can direct Siri to perform a series of tasks while keeping their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. Using Eyes Free mode, Siri takes hands-free functionality even further and minimizes distractions even more by keeping your iOS device's screen from lighting up.
"iPhone has become so integral to people's lives that they continue to use them in their vehicles," said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of automobile product planning, American Honda. "Offering Honda and Acura owners Siri and its Eyes Freemode via Bluetooth is an incredible opportunity to provide next-generation connectivity and meet our customer's ever-changing needs."
Honda says it has reengineered its software to be able to integrate Siri Eyes Free mode seamlessly onto the Bluetooth HandsFreeLink system via the onboard microphone and speakers.
Accord Euro to survive for a 3rd-generation
Despite rumors of its pending demise and replacement of a global Accord, Honda has confirmed that the Accord Euro (known as the Acura TSX to North Americans) will see the light of day for a 3rd-generation. It was widely speculated earlier in 2012 that Acura would combine the TSX and TL into one model: the TLX. While the TLX name is confirmed to replace the TL come 2014, we are unsure whether or not the survival of the next-gen Accord Euro will mean the same for the Acura TSX. However, a next-gen TSX will help Honda justify the engineering costs for a new Accord Euro.
Either way, we will have 4 sedans closely impeding on one another, the ILX on the TSX, the TSX on the TLX, the TLX on the RLX. And we won't know whether or not the next-gen TSX will exist until a refreshed ILX lands in 2014-2015.

Acura poised to become luxury brand?
![]() |
| Part of Acura's shift upmarket, the 2014 RLX |
Honda's Acura brand is attempting to take place among some of the industry's most luxurious and best brands with new productions and ambitious sales goals, according to John Mendel, executive vice president with American Honda.
He said that Acura will have a bigger push in the US going forward as the company expects to use a pull strategy to see Acuras exported to markets that want to see these vehicles such as China, Russia and the Middle East. Mendel believes that it has taken the focus of the last several years for Honda to truly define what Acura means and to position it for success as a luxury brand. A senior exec always described Acura as orbiting Honda and Mendel says that "now it is time to send Acura into its own orbit".
Honda has ambitious global goals of 6 million in sales by March 31, 2017 with Acura making up a small chunk of that goal. By the end of March 31, 2013, global sales are expected to be around 4 million.

Honda America Launches 2014 Accord PHEV Plug-In
Honda's 2014 Accord PHEV Plug-In model officially went on sale in California and New York on January 15th starting at $40 470. The model comes fully equipped. Recently, the model was granted the status as the first vehicle to pass the stringent smog emissions standards issued by the California Air Resources Board.
As news of the PHEV Plug-In came, there were also tidbits about the upcoming 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid model. While both models share Honda's 2-motor hybrid system that includes a 2.0L Atkinson 4-cylinder engine creating 137hp in tandem with a 124-kw traction electric model along with an electric CVT creating a combined output of 196hp, the regular Hybrid model will not be available with a plug-in setup unlike the PHEV. The non-plug-in Honda Accord Hybrid is expected to achieve MPG ratings of 49/45 city/highway mpg while the Accord PHEV Plug-In has been rated at 115 MPGe with a range of 13-20 miles on electric power.
Honda plans to be building the 2014 Accord Hybrid at its Marysville, Ohio plant with $23 million set to be invested at the plant to add 95,000 square-feet and 50+ workers. The 2014 Accord PHEV Plug-In is currently made in Japan but production could shift to the Ohio plant in the coming years dependent upon demand.
Honda Launches at the 2013 Montreal Auto Show
In addition to the Honda GEAR concept launched at the Montreal Auto Show, Honda Canada also showed off the next iteration of the Honda Accord Coupe HFP along with a tuner version of the Civic called the Honda Civic Circuit Sports.
The Honda Accord Coupe HFP adds an extra level of limited-edition style and performance with a wider and lower appearance thanks to a 10-mm suspension drop, 19-inch wheels and a body kit that includes front, rear, side skirts along with a rear spoiler. A sport suspension was added and extra tire grip bolstered with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. Honda's Accord Coupe HFP will be available in limited numbers this spring with either a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual and your choice of ... black and white as exterior colors.
Honda's Civic Circuit Sports was a partnership with Honda Canada and the Performance Auto & Sound Magazine (PASMAG) to develop a track version of the Civic. The Circuit Sports adds key performance upgrades to the base Civic required for a track car such as lightweight Enkei wheels, a fully adjustable suspension, big brake kits, racing seats, intake and exhaust and ECU reflash.
Honda Wins at Polk Automotive Awards
Honda has received three 2012 Polk Automotive Loyalty Awards honoring the brand in key high-growth segments. For the third time and second straight year, the Honda brand led the industry in "Hispanic Market Loyalty to Make." Best-selling in their segments for 2012, Civic and CR-V captured awards for owner loyalty in the highly-competitive "Compact Car" and "Compact SUV" categories.
"Honda has never taken owner loyalty lightly, and it's been an honor to see so many owners return for a new Honda during the last year," said Tom Peyton, assistant vice president of Advertising and Marketing at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Winning three awards from Polk in these hard-fought segments validates Honda's commitment to high vehicle quality and long-term customer satisfaction."
The Polk Automotive Loyalty Awards are based on actual model year purchase/lease activity and recognize manufacturers for superior performance in owner retention -- a critical aspect of building and maintaining market share.
"Honda's wins this year are a great example of their commitment to owner loyalty," saidBrad Smith, director of Polk's Loyalty Management Practice. "Retaining customers in a competitive marketplace is extremely challenging and Honda's product offerings, combined with their customer engagement strategies have resulted in high rates of repurchase loyalty."
Owners had such a positive overall experience that they came back to buy another vehicle of the same model, make, or manufacturer. Awards are based on actual consumer transactions, with more than 5.9 million household records from the 2012 model year being analyzed to determine the winners based on information obtained from state vehicle registrations and lease transaction information.
Chinese-made Fits a success in Canada?
Overshadowed by the success of the Honda Civic, the Honda Fit has been the forgotten compact in Honda Canada's lineup. Couple that with the high exchange rates from Japan and the Japanese-made Fit was often pushed aside as Canadian dealers would have higher margins selling the Canadian-made Civic instead.
Now that Honda Canada sells only China-made Fits and the 2013 Honda Civic starting price is about $1000 more, the story is a little different.
The only Chinese-made car on sale in Canada has been what Honda Canada calls "a success" after Fits made in China went on sale in early 2011 in Canada.
Fit sales grew from 2 835 in 2011 to 4 736 in 2012 helped by the greater availability of Fits from China. Honda believes that sales of the Fit could be higher if it could get them, meaning that Fit sales have always been determined by supply and they are at near-capacity with current levels.
That will all change by 2014 as Honda completes a new Mexico plant, designed to produce Fit and Fit-based products. The Mexico plant will supply the North American markets. Not only that, but the Mexico plant will help boost the ratio of vehicles that Honda makes in North America vs. those it sells here to more than 90%.
Honda America is projecting a sales record of 1.55+ million vehicles in 2013 while Honda Canada is rather modest about its targets, projecting a small increase but not enough to surpass records set in 2008.
2013 Honda Accord Nominated to be 2013 CCOTY
The venerable 2013 Honda Accord sedan has been nominated as a Top 3 Finalist for the Canadian Car of the Year by the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) at the Montreal Auto Show. The winner will be announced in February at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.
"To have the all-new Accord recognized by so many of Canada's top journalists is something we are extremely proud of," said Dave Jamieson, assistant vice president, Honda Canada. "We designed the new Accord to do what it has always done - raise the bar in the family car category. AJAC's recognition, along with the incredible feedback we're getting from our customers, tells us that we've accomplished just that."
Surprise in Montreal! Honda GEAR Concept Launched!
To the surprise of most auto journalists, Honda introduced its new GEAR small concept at the Montreal Auto Show ... rather than the North American Auto Show in Detroit. Inspired by fixed-gear bicycles, the Honda GEAR is a concept targeted at younger new car buyers but according to Honda, is not a direct link to the forthcoming production of the next-generation Fit/Jazz or any other small cars.
When asked about the affordability of cars towards young car buyers, Dave Marek, design director at Honda R&D America says the concept "tears down those walls - it's practical but fun, customizable, connected and affordable. Everything that young, discerning urban buyers would want in a car."
